Spore Community Event with Maxis
Maxis QA
Rybolton attended the Spore Community Event last week on behalf of Sporeum.com and recorded the 55 minute Question and Answer period. This is all discussion, so there is no footage of gameplay, but certainly a very interesting listen. (Apologies for the audio, but we've tried to ramp it up the best we can.)
Thanks to Rybolton for recording the session.

First Spore Review
Posted on August 27, 2008     Reported by 18Lama
The very first Spore review. The PC powerplay mag reviews the complete game for the first time. You can read the full PDF here.

I found the review to be very un-biased and balanced. They have given it a rating of 9/10.

+) limitless custom content possibilities, open ended approach
-) Not deep enough, too much tilt towards creators and creations, Designed for non-gamers

Why Isn't Everyone Copying Will Wright?
Posted on August 27, 2008     Reported by 18Lama
We wonder why everyone hasn't rushed to embrace user-made content

Consoles are connected, we’re all on Facebook, and Will Wright’s Spore has a development team of thousands. Other developers should wake up and take the hint.

Impressions Of Spore Impressions
Posted on August 26, 2008     Reported by 18Lama
Spore doesn’t ship for the PC for a couple of weeks, but it’s already out on iPods.

Electronic Arts snuck the cell-stage-only version of Spore onto the iTunes yesterday. This version of “Spore” is not compatible with the iPhone or iPod Touch. Those are coming soon.

Interestingly, this one controls far better than the iPhone version that I’ve played several times. The accelerometer-based controls there are a little unwieldy, while the iPod version manipulates your cell’s motion with the thumbwheel.

Prototypes GonzagoGL And Waterboy Released!
Posted on August 26, 2008     Reported by kaploy9
Two new Spore prototypes were released today.
GonzagoGL is an OpenGL-based prototype of the Spore Creature game.

Similar to SPUG, it places the player in an environment with predators, prey, shelter and vegetation. GonzagoGL advances the SPUG model to include higher quality terrain and a greater emphasis on gameplay.

GonzagoGL was the final gameplay prototype developed for Spore.
WaterBoy is a fluid dynamics simulator designed to explore the behavior of large bodies of water on uneven terrain.

Developed in 2002, WaterBoy also demonstrates early application of modern graphics technology, including environment cube mapping and custom shaders.

Spore Creature Creator Patch 1.01.0000
Posted on August 26, 2008     Reported by JonahNYC
Those of you who have the Spore Creature Creator will find they have an autopatch waiting, to upgrade it to 1.01.0000. There’s no patch notes yet to say exactly what was fixed, but the SCC has had problems with creatures vanishing from players’ rosters, inability to upload somewhat complex creatures to the Sporepedia, and general stability issues.

When we find out exactly what it does, we’ll let you know.

Will Wright On The Origins Of 'Spore'
Posted on August 26, 2008     Reported by 18Lama

On September 7, Electronic Arts will release its long-awaited and much-anticipated Spore. For many, this will be the biggest video game event of the year, and possibly even the last several years.

Spore, which was first announced in 2005, takes players through the process of evolution, from simple cell-like creatures, step by step, on out into space, is the latest from The Sims and SimCity designer Will Wright. There is little question that Wright is one of the industry's most important figures, as evidenced by the packed houses he always speaks to and the reverence everyone from gamers to other designers to reporters have for him.

Lockup Bug Hits EA IPod Game Spore Origins
Posted on August 26, 2008     Reported by 18Lama
Readers and iLounge Editors have discovered that a lockup bug affects Electronic Arts’ new iPod game Spore Origins, released last night for the fifth-generation iPod, iPod classic, and third-generation iPod nano. The lockup, which causes the iPod to freeze while the hard drive is still spinning and requires a hard reset to remedy, takes place on the game’s initial loading screen on iPod classics running both 1.0.x and 1.1.x software; we have tested using the most recent software version 1.1.2. It does not appear to affect the third-generation iPod nano or fifth-generation iPod running the latest software.

'Spore' Designer Spills On Explicit Creatures
Posted on August 25, 2008     Reported by 18Lama
Will Wright is not offended by the explicit monsters some folks have created using his evolution simulator, no matter which private parts they may resemble. In fact, Wright said he's been impressed with the indecent beasts spawned by a slimmed-down edition of "Spore," his much-anticipated but difficult-to-describe game.

"When you give players creative control, you have to expect they're going to do the unexpected," the prolific video game designer said. "Some of it's really good for what they were shooting for. It's amazingly explicit, especially when those creations are animated. We just have to make sure those people aren't messing up the experience for others."

Impressions Of Spore - By Rybolton
Posted on August 24, 2008     Reported by rybolton

I know that I am in a somewhat unique position, I have played the final release build of Spore, yet I feel that I've only scratched the surface.

I started my 3 hour play session by building a UFO in the Vehicle Editor.  The Vehicle Editor includes parts for all 4 types of vehicles you can design in Spore; land, sea, air and space. Maxis has simply condensed all types of Vehicles into a single editor.  Once my UFO was complete, I decided I wanted to fly it around in Space, so I started a new game.

On the galaxy map there were 5 planets that could be chosen as a starting place, most of them about midway up one of the arms of the galaxy.  Once a starting location is chosen, a new open planet will be produced to keep the available starting options at 5.  I was then prompted to start my new game in one of the unlocked stages.  Since this was a brand new game, and nobody had played through any of it before, I had to pick the Cell Stage...

EA Hires Engineer Who Had Brain Rewired And Became An Artist
Posted on August 21, 2008     Reported by 18Lama

Please welcome the life-affirming and thought-provoking story of Ken Walters.

Mr. Walters was an engineer who suffered massive spinal and internal damage when a truck driver lost control and pinned him to a wall. He lost his job, was confined to a wheelchair and sank into a depression that lasted 19 years.

Just to add a little relish to his good fortune, he also had two heart attacks. Fortunately, he then suffered a brain hemorrhage. But Mr. Walters' remarkable resilience in surviving such mind-numbing misfortune turned into a mind-altering second life.

One day, his work, which consists of creating mythical creatures of strange and wonderful dimensions, was spotted by EA. The company decided he was so good that they commissioned him to create 100 dinosaur characters for Spore, the new game that's supposed to help your brain.
